Why bees matter

More than a jar of honey

Every hive we keep is a small engine of the ecosystem. Here is what pollinators do, what threatens them, and what we actually do about it.

Roughly three-quarters of the world’s leading food crops benefit at least partly from animal pollination — fruits, vegetables, nuts, coffee, cardamom and oilseeds among them.

About a third of global crop production by volume depends on pollinators. Staple grains are wind-pollinated, which is why this figure is lower than the crop-count one.

The problem

What is going wrong

Habitat loss

Forests, hedgerows and wildflower patches keep giving way to concrete and monoculture, leaving bees fewer places to nest and less to forage.

Pesticides

Sprays applied to crops in bloom poison foragers and can quietly weaken whole colonies before anyone notices.

Pests and disease

Mites, hive beetles and viral infections travel between colonies and can hollow out an apiary in a single bad season.

Competition from introduced bees

Imported high-yield honeybees compete with native species for forage and nest sites, pushing the bees that belong here to the margins.

Climate and rainfall shifts

Erratic monsoons and shifting bloom calendars break the old rhythm between bees and flowers that both sides depend on.

Loss of beekeeping knowledge

As older keepers retire without successors, centuries of local craft — stingless-bee keeping above all — risk fading out within a generation.

Our part

What we actually do

We keep native bees, not imported ones. Apis cerana and cheruthen belong to these hills, and they do not crowd out the wild pollinators around them.

We practise meliponiculture at scale. Over fifty stingless-bee hives keep a fading Kerala craft alive, working and worth passing on.

We manage the monsoon — Kerala’s real lean season. These hills have no cold winter; the hungry months are the long rains of June to August, when little blooms. So we harvest only genuine surplus before the monsoon and leave each colony a chamber of its own honey, move the hives under rain shelter, narrow the entrances against robbing and wax moth, and keep the stands ant-guarded. If an unusually hard monsoon still runs a colony’s stores down, we give measured support feeding — the practice Kerala’s bee research stations recommend — purely to keep the brood alive; nothing produced from it is ever harvested as honey.

We put colonies into other people’s gardens. Every hive we sell comes with guidance attached, and each one pollinates a neighbourhood far beyond our own apiaries.

We harvest to the season, not to demand. If a bloom fails, that honey simply does not exist that year — we will not blend or buy in to fill the gap.
